Chief Executive Officer & Chief Investment Officer
Mr. Bauer is a founding member and CEO/CIO of Contrarian Capital Management, L.L.C. and leads the firm’s corporate investment activities. Mr. Bauer has 35 years of experience investing in both active and passive distressed securities. He has headed or served on numerous bank debt, bond, or trade claims committees and is a founding member of the Trade Claims Buyers Association. He has served on a number of Board of Directors including International Coal and Special Metals Corp. From 1986 until 1995, Mr. Bauer was a Managing Director at Oppenheimer and Co. where he founded the distressed sales and trading business and was the co-Portfolio Manager of the Oppenheimer Horizon distressed securities partnerships which commenced operations in 1987. From 1981 to 1986, he was the Senior Analyst in the Bankruptcy Group at Bear Stearns where he originated and helped execute the successful control investment in Revere Copper and Brass. From 1977 to 1979, Mr. Bauer was an Analyst in the Credit Audit Department of The Chase Manhattan Bank N.A. and was responsible for identifying companies in the Bank’s loan portfolio that were likely to default. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA (with Honors) from Rutgers College.
Janice Stanton, CFA
President & Portfolio Manager
Ms. Stanton is a founding member and President of Contrarian Capital Management, L.L.C. She works closely with Jon Bauer on the firm’s corporate investments activities, with a particular focus on senior secured corporate investments. Ms. Stanton also manages the Contrarian Capital Senior Secured Fund. She has 31 years of experience in distressed securities. Prior to co-founding Contrarian, Ms. Stanton was the Founder and Head of the Bank Debt and Trade Claims desk at Oppenheimer & Co. from 1986 to 1995, and was responsible for bank debt and trade claim investments in the Oppenheimer Horizon partnerships as well as for outside clients. From 1985 to 1986, she was an associate in the corporate finance department of Lehman Brothers and worked on equity and debt financings as well as the first principal LBO investment made by Lehman. Prior to business school, Ms. Stanton was an analyst with Booz Allen Hamilton, focusing on business strategy consulting. She has served on numerous bank debt committees, including Audio Visual Services, Pillowtex and Warnaco. She has also chaired and served on Official Committees of Unsecured Creditors, such as in the case of Service Merchandise and Edison Brothers. Ms. Stanton received her MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and graduated magna cum laude with a BS from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She is also a CFA charterholder.
Managing Director & Portfolio Manager
Mr. Raine joined Contrarian in 2003 and is a Co-Portfolio Manager for the Flagship strategy and is responsible for sourcing and managing corporate loans, bonds and trade claims as well as directional shorts. In his role at Contrarian, Mr. Raine has served on the Board of Directors of Quinn Industrial Holdings Limited, Safety-Kleen, Inc., and American Blind & Wallpaper Factory, Inc. Prior to joining Contrarian, Mr. Raine worked in the Private Equity Group of Brown Brothers Harriman where his responsibilities included screening potential investments, performing due diligence and monitoring portfolio companies. Mr. Raine received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BA from Oxford University.
Managing Director (Trade Claims & Rescue Financing) & Portfolio Manager
Mr. McCormack joined Contrarian in 2004 and is a Portfolio Manager responsible for the Trade Claims strategy as well as the firm’s Direct Lending effort. In his role at Contrarian, Mr. McCormack has served on the Board of Directors of The Matlet Group and Custom Food Products, Inc., and is currently on the Board of Exam Management Services Inc.. Prior to joining Contrarian, he was a Director with UBS Investment Bank’s Leveraged Finance Group where he was responsible for advising private equity clients on mergers & acquisitions, restructurings, and capital raisings including bank, high yield and mezzanine debt as well as initial public offerings. From 1998 to 2002, he was a Vice President in the Leveraged Finance Group with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (“DLJ”) and with Credit Suisse First Boston following their acquisition of DLJ. From 1991 to 1996, he was an Audit Manager of Deloitte & Touche, LLP. Mr. McCormack graduated Beta Gamma Sigma with a MBA from Indiana University Graduate School of Business and received a BA from Catholic University of America.
Christopher Paryse, CFA
Managing Director (Corporate)
Mr. Paryse joined Contrarian in 2011 and is a Portfolio Manager responsible for generating and analyzing debt and equity investments on both the long and short side. Prior to joining Contrarian, Mr. Paryse was a Senior Analyst with Foxhill Capital Partners a distressed/special situation hedge fund from 2006 to 2011. In that capacity he focused on distressed credit investments as well as equity investments concentrated on activist situations, spin offs, post reorg equities, and shorts. Mr. Paryse also served on numerous ad hoc creditor and equity committees including committees involved with Visteon, Hancock Fabrics, Global Power & Equipment and Penn Traffic. From 2003 to 2006, he was an Analyst at Triage Capital Management, a distressed hedge fund. Mr. Paryse received BA’s in both Economics and Engineering and Applied Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a CFA charterholder.
Mr. Weisser joined Contrarian in 2015 as a Senior Vice President on the Corporate Distressed Team. He brings approximately 10 years of experience as a restructuring/bankruptcy attorney to the firm, most recently with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP where he was an Associate in the Business Restructuring Group from 2009 to 2015. At Gibson Dunn, Mr. Weisser worked on a wide variety of assignments in the restructuring/bankruptcy arena; examples include representations of parties in the OSG, Arcapita, Borders, and Madoff cases. Prior to Gibson Dunn, he was an Associate at O’Melveny & Meyers, LLP from 2007 to 2009 and an Associate at Jones Day LLP from 2005 to 2007. Mr. Weisser received his JD/MBA from Duke University and a BA in Economics and History (with distinction) from Cornell University.
Ms. Satterlee joined Contrarian in 2014 and serves as Senior Vice President. In her role at Contrarian, she focuses on analyzing distressed investment opportunities in U.S. Corporate loans, bonds and trade claims. Prior to joining Contrarian, she was an Investment Analyst at Varde Partners where she was responsible for analyzing U.S. stressed/distressed corporate debt from 2012 to 2014. From 2007 to 2010, she was a Senior Analyst at CIM Group where she was responsible for analyzing private equity investments. Ms. Satterlee received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, a M.S. from the London School of Economics and a M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Mr. Berger joined Contrarian in 2016 as a member of the Corporate Distressed Team. He has been investing in and/or operating distressed and under-performing companies for 26 years. From 2009 to 2015, Mr. Berger was founder and managing member of Recapitalization Partners, an investment firm devoted to investing in smaller private company turnarounds. Prior to Recapitalization Partners, he served exclusively as full time adviser to Contrarian from 2003 to 2009. From 1998 to 2003, he was General Partner and founder of Lindenwood Capital Partners, an investment partnership devoted to acquiring private distressed private companies. From 1994 to 1998, he founded and was President of White River Partners, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of White River Corporation (NASDAQ-listed) specializing in the acquisition and restructuring of troubled businesses. Mr. Berger served in this capacity until June 1998 when White River Corporation was sold to Harvard Capital Management. From 1990 to 1994, while at Fund American Enterprise Holdings Inc. (NYSE-listed), he was responsible for the analysis and investments of distressed and underperforming companies and securities within Fund Americans Portfolio. Mr. Berger has served as Chairman of the Board and Director for various companies. Mr. Berger is a graduate of Rutgers University and is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner and Certified Valuation Analyst.
Mr. Zuckerman joined Contrarian in 2017 as a Vice President on the Corporate Distressed Team. Prior to joining Contrarian, he was an investment analyst at Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Co., where he focused on distressed credit. From 2012 to early 2015, he practiced restructuring law at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Mr. Zuckerman received a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and an A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Karim El Khoury
European Corporate Strategy Head (London)
Mr. El Khoury joined Contrarian in 2004 and is the Managing Member of our London based affiliate, Contrarian Capital London. Mr. El Khoury is responsible for identifying, analyzing, and monitoring Contrarian’s European corporate investments. Prior to joining Contrarian, Mr. El Khoury was Director of Exor S.A., an investment holding company owned by the Agnelli Group, from 1993-2003. In that capacity he helped develop the Group’s portfolio of European investments across several sectors. From 1990-1993, he was a Manager in the Paris office of strategy consulting firm Bain & Company, overseeing corporate strategy and operational restructuring assignments. From 1987-1990, he was an Associate in the M&A department of Merrill Lynch in N.Y., and worked on the successful completion of several buy side and sell side transactions in the U.S. From 1984-1985, he was an Analyst in the M&A department of Lazard Frères in N.Y. He is fluent in French. Mr. El Khoury received his MBA from the Wharton School of Business and graduated magna cum laude with a BSBA from Georgetown University.
European Corporate (Paris)
Mr. Hagemann joined Contrarian in 2005 and focuses on investment opportunities in Europe. Prior to joining Contrarian, Mr. Hagemann was an Associate in Distressed Debt Trading & Principal Investment with Bank of America in London from 2003 to 2005. In that capacity he covered European distressed investments including bank debt, bonds, liquidations and financing with a particular focus on the U.K., Germany, France and Scandinavia. From 2002 to 2003, he was a Senior Financial Analyst in Financial Restructurings for Houlihan Lokey in London, and a founding member of their European operations, covering restructuring mandates in a variety of European jurisdictions, mostly on the creditor side. From 2000 to 2002, he was a Financial Analyst with the European M&A Group at UBS in London working on European M&A, restructuring and equity raising mandates. He is fluent in German and French. Mr. Hagemann received his Masters in Management from ESCP Europe studying in Paris, Oxford and Berlin. Before ESCP Europe he studied Economics at Ludwig-Maximillians-Universitat in Munich.
Distressed Equity Strategy Head
Mr. Morris joined Contrarian in 2006 and is responsible for managing the Distressed Equity Strategy. Prior to this role, Mr. Morris was the Assistant Portfolio Manager of Contrarian Long Short and Contrarian Distressed Equity. Before joining Contrarian, Mr. Morris was an Analyst at Advent Capital Management L.L.C. from 2003 to 2005. At Advent Capital, Mr. Morris covered event driven and deep value equities as well as high yield and convertible bond investments. From 2000 to 2002, he was an Associate in the Telecom & Media Investment Banking group at UBS where he advised corporate clients on restructuring activities, high yield offerings, IPOs and mergers, and acquisitions. Mr. Morris received his MBA from Columbia Business School and graduated phi beta kappa with a BA in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin.
Structured Products/Corporate Credit
Mr. Isaacson joined Contrarian in 2011 and is a Vice President responsible for the analysis and evaluation of financial institutions, mortgage servicers, specialty finance companies, and aircraft financing. Prior to joining Contrarian, Mr. Isaacson was an Associate Portfolio Manager and Trader for Old Hill Partners from 2008 to 2011. In that capacity he was responsible for the management of several asset and mortgage-backed securities portfolios, execution of principal transactions, and development of much of the firms quantitative risk models. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Isaacson was an Analyst for Old Hill Partners, where he focused on the surveillance, evaluation and financing of subordinated mortgage-backed assets. Mr. Isaacson received a BS in Finance from Fairfield University.
Ms. Gianis joined Contrarian in 2009 and is a Vice President and member of the trade claims team. In her role at Contrarian, Ms. Gianis monitors and researches smaller bankruptcies and liquidations. Prior to joining Contrarian, Ms. Gianis was an Associate at Deutsche Bank Sourcing/Origination where she sourced bank debt and trade claims from 2005 to 2009. Ms. Gianis received a BA from Vanderbilt University where she played Division I lacrosse and had a 2004 final four appearance.
Mr. Spillane joined Contrarian in 2004 and was promoted to the position of Senior Vice President and Head Trader in January of 2009. Prior to joining Contrarian, he worked on the bank debt trading desk at the inter-broker dealer Fimat USA, Inc. He is responsible for overseeing the firm’s trading operation and has experience trading equities, debt, derivative instruments and trade claims in the U.S., European and Emerging markets. Mr. Spillane serves as a member of the Firm’s Valuations Committee. Mr. Spillane graduated cum laude with a BA from Loyola University Maryland.
Mr. Lantz joined Contrarian in 2008. Prior to joining Contrarian, he was a Fixed Income Operations Associate with JPMorgan Hedge Fund Services from 2007 to 2008. From 2006 to 2007, he was a Market Administrator at Tullet Prebon, an interdealer broker. Mr. Lantz received a BS from Sacred Heart University.
Ms. Caufield joined Contrarian in 2009 as a Pricing Analyst/Operations Associate and was promoted to the position of Trader in August 2014. Prior to joining Contrarian, she was a Senior Operations Associate with Basso Capital from 2007 to 2009. From 2004 to 2007, she was employed with GE Asset Management, working on both the Equity and Fixed Income Operations teams. Ms. Caufield received a BS from Bentley University.
